Newton and Vicinity

Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine Kroeker, 78, were held Monday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church with Dr. Albert Epp officiating. Mrs. Kroeker died May 9 at the Bethel Home for Aged, where she had been a resident for some years. Death was due to a stroke suffered one month earlier. The former Katherine Janzen, she was born in Sebastak, Crimea, South Russia, and moved to Newton from Chicago in 1936. She married John J. Kroeker in the Crimea in 1918, and he preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Walter Thiesen of Newton; one son, Jacob Kroeker of Wichita; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Kroeker and Mrs. Elizabeth Kroeker, both of Winnipeg, Man.; and three grandchildren. The two sisters and their daughters, Mrs. Geo. Goertzen of Boissevain, Man. and Mrs. Pete Rempel of Elm Creek, Man. came for the funeral.
