Dr. Adam Kauffman

Adam Kauffman, son of Jacob and Lena (Lehman) Kauffman, was born April 5, 1883, at Elkhart, Ind. At an early age he came with his family to Warrensburg, Mo., where he attended the public school and the Warrensburg High School. Adam graduated from the Needles Institute of Optometry at Kansas City, Mo., and later received his degree in Ocular Science from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry.

On Dec. 10, 1905, he married Ora Jane Parsons. She was taken by death on Oct. 7, 1917. On Aug. 16, 1933, he married Minnie M. Campbell at Hutchinson, Kan.

Dr. Kauffman had practiced optometry in Jetmore, Kan. for 16 years before moving to Ellinwood, Kan. where he practiced for 27 years before his retirement. Dr. and Mrs. Kauffman had lived in the Schowalter Villa at Hesston, Kan. for the past three and one-half years.

Adam was a member of the Hesston Mennonite Church and a long-time member of the Kansas Optometric Assn. Eighteen months of failing health preceded his eternal rest which came at the Schowalter Villa on Aug. 22, 1972, at the age of 89 years. He was the last of seven children in his family.

Survivors include his wife, of Hesston; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Alice Holden of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Henrietta Spilman of Brighton, Colo.; a son, Hadley Kauffman of Garden City, Kan.; 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
