MRS. KATHARINA LOEWEN

Katharina Loewen of Winnipeg passed into the presence of her Lord on November 12. She was born in Sagradovka, in southern Russia on October 16, 1899, the daughter of Henry and Anna Unruh. From her childhood she was surrounded by godly influences and in 1912, during the week of prayer in her home church, she was convicted of her need for a Saviour and received salvation. She claimed the words of Isa. 53:4, 5: "Surely he hath borne our grief..." At the age of 15 she followed the Lord in baptism and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church.

She was married to Gerhard Loewen in 1922, a union blessed with a daughter and a son. Two years after his birth, her son passed away and in 1934, she lost her husband through an accident. Despite the tragedies, she found comfort in the Lord and his promises. Her two brothers and two sisters greatly helped to ease the burdens of her life.

She underwent surgery for a tonsilectomy in December, 1972 and just before she was to be released, she suffered a stroke which left her partially paralyzed. For the remaining three years of her life, though she could not communicate it verbally, her love for others and her faith in God remained strong.

She leaves to mourn, her daughter Kay Klassen, and husband Jack; grandchildren, Peter and Jackie Tiessen, Gerry, and Don and Eleanor Neufeld; as well as a sister, Maria (Mrs. David) Teichroeb; and many others who knew and loved her.
