— Mrs. Mary Schmidt, 86, one of the pioneer settlers of the Gnadenberg community east of Newton, died Sunday morning at the Bethel Deaconess hospital, having suffered a fractured hip three weeks ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon at the Draper Funeral chapel and the Gnadenberg church, Rev. H. E. Miller in charge. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Ruth of Route 3, with whom she had been making her home, and Mrs. Roy Dreier of Hesston; a sister, Mrs. J. H. Harms of Wichita; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

MRS. J. J. SCHMIDT

Mrs. J. J. Schmidt, nee Mary Kliewer, daughter of John P. and Agnetha Foth Kliewer, was born in Michalin, Kiev, Russia July 23, 1866. In 1874 her parents with their entire family migrated to Kansas.

She declared her faith in Jesus Christ as her Saviour and was baptized May 14, 1883, becoming a member of the Gnadenberg Mennonite church and remaining loyal to her Christian faith to the end. Although her eyesight was poor the last few years, she did not fail to read a portion of the Bible daily.

On May 12, 1889, she was united in marriage to Jacob J. Schmidt who preceded her in death January 18, 1930. They founded their home in the Gnadenberg community. Four daughters were born to this union. Besides rearing their daughters they opened their home to a nephew, whom they nurtured for two years, and another motherless infant whom they nurtured for 13 years.

Twenty-eight years of her married life was spent on the farm, before moving to Newton. While living in Newton she was a member of the Bethel College church. The last three years she made her home with her daughter Mrs. Arthur Schmidt.

On July 6 she suffered a fractured hip after which complications developed, causing her death July 27, 1952, having reached the age of 86 years, four days.

Besides her husband, two daughters Minnie and Selma preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Ruth and husband Arthur Schmidt, Newton, R. R. 3, Lillian and her husband, Roy W. Dreier, Hesston, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. J. H. Harms, Wichita.

Brief funeral services were held at the Draper funeral chapel at 9.30 Wednesday morning July 30, conducted by Rev. J. J. Voth, followed by services at the Gnadenberg church at 10:30 with Rev. H. E. Miller officiating. A male quartet composed of Menno Nickel, Gerhard Nickel, Herbert Schmidt and Henry Janzen accompanied by Mrs. Menno Nickel sang.

Pallbearers were A. N. Riesen, V. T. Harms, I. S. Harms. G. F. Harms, Alfred Harms, and Albert Harms.

Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
