JOHN FREDERICK MOYER

John Frederick Moyer, son of Rev. Manasseh and Anna Eymann Moyer, was born near Fortuna, Mo. on March 1, 1885. Following a lingering illness he passed away at the home in North Newton, Kans., on March 13, 1955, at the age of 70.

In 1901 the family moved to Deer Creek, Okla., where he was baptized by his father who was minister of the church. Later, while attending Bethel College, he also served as minister at Deer Creek, having been ordained in 1910.

He was a graduate of Bethel College, A.B. degree, and of Witmarsum Seminary, A.M. degree, and did some graduate study at the University of Chicago.

In 1913 he married Mary Regier of Moundridge, Kans. After his graduation from Bethel in 1915 they lived at Freeman, S. Dak. for two years while he taught at the Jr. College. In 1917 he became pastor of the Grace Mennonite church, Pandora, Ohio. Here his wife, Mary, and small daughter, Mildred, passed away, leaving him his son, Herman.

In 1920 he married Helen Isaac of Moundridge and joined the faculty of Bethel College. After teaching Economics and History for several years he became assistant treasurer, which position he held until his retirement.

He was a member of the Bethel College Mennonite church and for a number of years taught the Men’s Bible class. The active response of the members made this enjoyable and stimulating.

He loved his work and gave himself unselfishly and sacrificially to the cause of the school and the church. He loved people and delighted in remembering all those with whom he had some contact. His fine sense of humor endeared him to his students and associates, and made many seemingly difficult problems simple.

Besides his wife, Helen, of North Newton, he leaves three sons, Herman of Washington, Ill., Melvin of Plainfield, N. J., and Harold of Freeman, S. Dak., two brothers, Edwin and William, both of Deer Creek, Okla., and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 15, in the Bethel College Chapel, Rev. Harold W. Buller officiating, assisted by Dr. J. H. Langenwalter. The Bethel College A Cappella Choir directed by Dr. W. H. Hohmann sang three numbers. Mrs. Andrew Douglass served as organist.

Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
