Pioneer Businessman Died at Freeman

Freeman, S. D. — Residents of the Freeman community paid last respects to one of the pioneer businessmen here, Joseph I. Walter, at funeral services on Oct. 13. He passed away at his home Oct. 10 at the age of 76.

Born at Johannesruh, Russia on July 16, 1874, he came to this community at an early age and attended Wayne Teachers’ college in Nebraska and Valparaiso university in Indiana. After teaching in a rural school for several years, he was engaged in the general merchandise business here for 51 years. He had been a member of the Bethany Mennonite church since 1906, and had been a Sunday school teacher for about 50 years.

He leaves his wife Maria, whom he married July 16, 1899, three daughters and three sons.
