Retired Leader Of Institutions Dies in Hesston

HESSTON, Kan. — Herman J. Andres, a retired administrator of Mennonite institutions, died Oct. 12 at Schowalter Villa. He was 91.

Andres served as administrator of Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Bethel Home in Newton and the Schowalter Foundation.

He was past president of the Kansas Hospital Association, helped organize and was chairman of the board of Prairie View Inc., and helped organize and served for several years as president of the Association of Mennonite Hospitals and Homes.

Andres served as president of the General Conference Mennonite Church Board of Publications for 12 years and was a former member of the GC executive committee. Twice he went on special assignments to South America for Mennonite Central Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Joanna (Sudermann), whom he married in 1931; a son, James H. of Rosthern, Sask.; a daughter, Amy E. Reed of Broomfield, Colo.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at First Mennonite Church in Newton, with Verney Unruh officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
