11-Year-Old Mt. Lake Boy Suffocates in Metal Corn Bin

Mt. Lake, Minn. — Funeral services were held at the E.M.B. Church here on Nov. 6 for Dwight Regier, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Regier who lost his life in a farm accident on Nov. 3.

The youth suffocated under about six feet of shelled corn in a metal storage bin at the Regier farm four miles north of here.

Dwight was helping his father during corn harvest, and they were auguring the corn from the bin into a truck. Mr. Regier told his son to turn off the augur when the truck bed was full, while he returned to the field to continue harvesting.

It is not known whether Dwight fell or crawled into the bin through an opening in the top. The father returned to check on the auguring operation, and when he observed that his son was missing and that no corn was coming out of the augur spout, immediately called for help.

The Mt. Lake fire department rescue squad, neighbors and city volunteers rushed to the scene and hurried to empty the bin. A cutting torch was used to open large holes in the side to speed the process. The boy was found in about 45 minutes, but all efforts at resuscitation were of no avail.

Surviving in addition to the parents are three sisters and two brothers, Cynthia, Cheryl, Debra, Loren and Barry; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Regier of Mt. Lake and David Heinrichs of Crystal City, Man.
