Former Bethel Prof., Women's Dean Dies
Goessel, Kan. — Eva G. (Geiger) Harshbarger, former dean of women and professor of home economics at Bethel College, died Feb. 5 at Bethesda Home. She was 88.
Harshbarger served with Mennonite Central Committee in Vietnam and Korea from 1953-56 and served in the World Friendship Center, Hiroshima, Japan, in 1976.
She served as president of the Kansas District YWCA and as president of the local branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She also taught home economics at Goessel High School.
Her husband, Emmett, who died in 1942, taught history at Bethel and started the college's Institute of International Relations.
Memorial services were held Feb. 12 at Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton. Darrell Fast and Don Kauffman officiated. Private graveside services and burial were at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
Survivors include two sons, John H. of Albert Lea, Minn., and Ivan L. of Troutdale, Ore.; two sisters, Mable Nordstrom of Ridgewood, N. J., and Marguerite Fretz of North Newton; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
