Bergen, Rosa Schlatter (1876-1956)
Mennonite Weekly Review obituary: 7 Jun 1956 p. 8
Birth date: 1876
text of obituary:
Mrs. Rosa (Schlatter) Bergen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johann Schlatter, was born July 13, 1876, at Inman, Kans., and died April 17, 1956, at 11:45 p.m., at the Riverside hospital, Blackwell, Okla.
She spent her youth at Inman where she was baptized and accepted into the Methodist church. She was united in marriage to George Bergen at the Hoffnungsau Mennonite church on Sept. 2, 1898.
To them were born nine children, three at Inman and six at Medford where they moved in March of 1902, and where on Sept. 21, they were accepted into the Medford Mennonite Church.
Here her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1928, and was buried at the Medford Mennonite cemetery.
She remained at Medford until she sold her farm in August, 1948, and from then on made her home with children in the various places, but remained a member of the Medford church till her death.
Surviving her are five daughters, Marie, Mrs. J. M. Reimer of Medford, Rose, Mrs. G. W. Peters of Wichita, Mabel, Mrs. Pete Froese of Nardin, Minnie, Mrs. Fred Anthony of Wichita, Ruby, Mrs. Theo. Dirksen of Wichita; four sons, Ben, John and Marvin of Peck, Kans., George of Valley Center, Kans., 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are one brother, John Schlatter, and seven sisters, May Bornhold, Annie Achilles, Mabel Schlatter, Allie Gordon, Lizzie Cordell, Cara Voght, and Clara Gruner, and a host of friends and relatives.
She was always of a kind, considerate spirit, cheerfully helping wherever she was able. Her faithfulness in church might well be accepted as an example for many. Even in old age she did much to help the ladies mission work.
She was strong and healthy till her last illness which became acute in December 1955. She passed away at the age of 79 years, nine months and four days.
May she rest in peace with her Lord.
