Retired Educator, Bible Scholar, Author Dies at Age 90

Berne, Ind. — Dr. Jasper A. Huffman, 90, retired educator, Bible conference speaker and author and a pioneer publisher of the former Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, died at Adams County Memorial Hospital on Dec. 7. He had been living in retirement at Swiss Village here until he suffered a heart attack a few days before his death.

A graduate of Bluffton College, McCormick Theological Seminary and Taylor University. Dr. Huffman was ordained to the ministry in 1904. He served on the faculty of the former Witmarsum Theological Seminary at Bluffton, O., 1915-22, and later as dean of the Divinity School at Marion, Ind., president of Winona Lake School of Theology, and dean of religion at Taylor University.

As a young minister in New Carlisle, Ohio, he founded the Bethel Publishing Co. which was later sold to the Missionary Church and moved to Elkhart, Ind. He was a member of the American Schools for Oriental Research and wrote a number of books on Biblical and archeological themes.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 9 at the West Missionary Church here, with Dr. Kenneth Geiger officiating. Burial was made at New Carlisle, Ohio.
