• Word has been received here of the death of Daniel J. Schmidt, 76, retired farmer of the Montezuma community, which occurred Aug. 23 at Trinity Hospital, Dodge City. He was a brother of Lewellyn [sic Llewellyn] Schmidt of Newton. Funeral services were held Saturday forenoon at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite near Montezuma, with Rev. Norman Koehn and Rev. David Koehn in charge.

DANIEL J. SCHMIDT
Daniel J. Schmidt was born Oct. 8, 1895 on a farm near Halstead, Kan. to Jacob A. R. and Katherine Schmidt. He died on Aug. 23, 1972 in the Trinity Hospital, Dodge City, Kan., reaching the age of 76.
Father grew to manhood in the Halstead community where he received his education. At the age of 23 he surrendered his life to Christ, and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on June 23, 1918. He remained faithful to his vows until death.
During World War I he served as a conscientious objector at Camp Funston. After his discharge he and his brother Nathan came to western Kansas and took up farming in Gray County. In 1920 he and his brother established residence on a farm southwest of Montezuma, Kan.
He married Eva Koehn of Halstead, Kan. on June 11, 1922. One son and one daughter were born into their home. They shared life's joys and sorrows for a little over 50 years, having celebrated the golden anniversary on June 11 of this year. He served on the Bethel Home building committee and latter on the Board of Directors.
