Long-Time Pastor At Tiskilwa, Ill. Dies

Tiskilwa, Ill. — Funeral services were conducted at the Willow Springs Mennonite Church here for Rev. C. Warren Long, 64, who had served as pastor of this congregation for nearly 20 years. Rev. Long died unexpectedly at his home Jan. 22 of an apparent heart attack.

A native of Nappanee, Ind., he was a graduate of the Goshen College Academy and Goshen College. During his long service to the church he served as pastor of the Peoria Mennonite Church and the Bellevue Church at Peoria. He was instrumental in organizing the Illinois Sunday School Normal and was its director from 1933 to 1937.

Rev. Long also served in other capacities in the Illinois Mennonite Conference and for some years was a member of the Mennonite Board of Missions.

Survivors include his second wife, the former Esther Mae Eby; two daughters, Mrs. Claude Gibson of Goshen, Ind. and Mrs. Stanley Albrecht of Tiskilwa; seven grandchildren; two brothers and one sister.

CHARLES WARREN LONG

Charles Warren Long, pastor of the Willow Springs Mennonite Church of Tiskilwa, Ill. was born near Nappanee, Ind. on Nov. 12, 1904, and died at his home in Tiskilwa on Jan. 22, 1969. He was the third son of Jacob and Jennie (Yoder) Long.

On June 22, 1927 he married Edna Miller of Pettisville, Ohio who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1963. One grandchild and his parents also preceded him in death.

To this union were born two daughters, Thelma Clarice (Mrs. Claude Gibson) of Goshen, Ind., and Althea Lorraine (Mrs. Stanley Albrecht) of Tiskilwa.

He was married to Esther Mae Eby of Lititz, Pa. at Goshen, Ind. on April 3, 1964. She survives, along with seven grandchildren, two brothers, Maurice of Osceola, Ind. and Raymond of Nappanee, Ind.; and one sister, Helen (Mrs. Jess Delcamp) Goshen, Ind.

In 1918 at the age of 14 he accepted Christ and was baptized in the Nappanee, Ind. Mennonite Church by Bishop Christophel.

In 1923 he graduated from Goshen College Academy. He spent the winter of 1923-24 in Chicago assisting S. M. Kanagy at the Mennonite Home Mission. He graduated from Goshen College in 1929.

On April 3, 1930 he was installed as a licensed pastor in the Peoria Mennonite Church, Peoria, Ill., by Bishop Sanford C. Yoder. At a later date he was ordained into the ministry at Peoria by Bishop Ezra Yordy and Bishop D. Hartzler.

In May 1947 he went as a Commissioner of Relief to Europe, serving in the Western, Eastern, and Southern Units until October of 1948.

He resigned from the Peoria pastorate on April 3, 1948 and was installed as pastor of the Willow Springs Mennonite Church at Tiskilwa on April 3, 1949. On Sept. 3, 1950 he was ordained bishop by Bishops A. C. Good, J. D. Hartzler and Ezra B. Yordy.

Pastor Long was active in the Bureau County Ministerial Assn. and served in various offices. He was one of the pastors who initiated the Volunteer Chaplaincy Service at Perry Memorial Hospital, Princeton, Ill., and had served as chairman of the Chaplains Committee since 1964.

He was a member of the Tiskilwa Library Board for a decade and a half. He had written a weekly column for newspapers since 1950. He served as disaster chairman in the county Red Cross Chapter for six years and on the Tiskilwa Planning Commission from 1966 to date.

Pastor Long appeared many times on the local radio "Daily Devotional Meditation," and conducted "Dial-a-Devotion," a telephone service, for over two years.

His home and study were always open to those who came during the day or night. He was a pastor to pastors, the congregation's pastor, the community pastor.
