• A tragedy at a Newton home last Friday forenoon claimed the life of Mrs. Marilyn Zielke, 28, who was fatally stabbed with a butcher knife in the hands of her mentally disturbed husband, Leroy Zielke, 31. The couple, married here 10 years ago, were expecting their first child in about two weeks. Mr. Zielke also stabbed himself several times in the abdomen, and later was shot down to police officers after fleeing the house through a bedroom window. He was taken to the Halstead Hospital and early this week was reported recovering from his injuries. He is reported to have said that he does not remember the stabbing, but will be questioned further by County Attorney Richard Hrdlicka. Three days before the tragedy, Mr. Zielke was told by a physician that he needed immediate psychiatric treatment. He had not been regularly employed. Funeral services for Mrs. Zielke, the former Marilyn Brown, were conducted Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.

• County Attorney Richard Hrdlicka has filed a charge of second degree murder against Leroy G. Zielke, accused of fatally stabbing his wife Marilyn at their home in Newton on Aug. 31. The charge specifies that the act was done “without deliberation and premeditation.” Mr. Zielke is now confined to the psychiatric ward at the Halstead Hospital where he is being interviewed by psychiatrists. Upon completion of their examinations he will be arraigned in county court here.
