•  Mr. and Mrs. Gus Martens, 420 West Seventh Street, experienced two deaths in the family on Monday and Friday.  July 20 their son, Edwin P. Martins, 44, residing in Hutchinson, died suddenly of a heart attack.  He had come home only the day before, after having been confined in the hospital for three weeks.  On July 23 their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Esther M. Martens, 42, wife of Victor P. Martens, of Halstead, died in the Halstead Hospital following a short illness.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Halstead Mennonite Church, with the pastor, Rev. A. E. Funk officiating.  Surviving besides her husband and the parents-in-law of Newton are one daughter, Judy; three sons, Eugene, Loren and Donald, all of the home, five brothers, Ed, Frank, Menno, Elmer and Levi Wiens, all of Inman, and two sisters, Mrs. Ike Friesen, Meade, and Mrs. Ed Regier, Conway.  Funeral services for Edwin P. Martens were held Monday afternoon at th First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson.  Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Bertha; two sons, Jim and Gerald, of the home; three brothers, Walt and Victor of Halstead and Melvin of Hesston; two sisters, Mrs. Phil Thiessen, Hutchinson, and Lois Ann Martens of Newton.

Mrs. Victor Martens, nee Esther Martha Wiens, daughter of John M. and Margaret Ediger Wiens, was born on Jan. 7, 1920 at Inman, Kan., and died at Halstead, Kan. on July 23, 1962, at the age of 42 years, six months and 16 days. 
As a nine-year-old girl she went with her parents to live on a farm near Dalhart, Texas, sharing the privations of the dusty 30's with them until 1937, when they returned to Kansas. 
She received her schooling in a rural grade school near Inman, Kan. and in another near her home in Texas. 
On April 1, 1934 she was baptized upon confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord, and received into the fellowship of the Plain View Mennonite Church at Texline, Texas by the Rev. J. W. Bergen.  She, along with her husband, transferred her membership to the Halstead Mennonite Church on June 9, 1946.   
On July 27, 1941 she was married to Victor Martens.  Together they moved onto a farm near Inman, Kan.  Several years later they moved to a farm east of Halstead, and a year ago this March they moved to Halstead. [''sic'' and a year moved to Halstead.] 
This union was blessed with four children:  Eugene, Judy, Loren and Donald, all at home. 
Mrs. Martens loved the Lord and gave of herself unsparingly in service to her family, to the Sunday school and to the church, or wherever there was opportunity. 
She leaves to mourn her death, her husband four children two sisters, Katherine, Mrs. Isaac Friesen of Meade, and Susan, Mrs. Ed. V. Regier of Conway; five brothers, Ed., Frank, Menno, Elmer and Levi Wiens, all of Inman, Kan., and many kindred and friends. 
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 25, at the First Mennonite Church in Halstead with Rev. A. E. Funk officiating.  A quartet of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Quiring and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Franz sang “Nearer My God To Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.”  Casketbearers were Ernest Mueller, Kenneth Wiens, Nick Wiens, Titus Jost, Don Penner and John Heidebrecht.  Burial was in the Halstead cemetery.

MRS. VICTOR MARTENS

Mrs. Victor Martens, nee Esther Martha Wiens, daughter of John M. and Margaret Ediger Wiens, was born on Jan. 7, 1920 at Inman, Kan., and died at Halstead, Kan. on July 23, 1962, at the age of 42 years, six months and 16 days.

As a nine-year-old girl she went with her parents to live on a farm near Dalhart, Texas, sharing the privations of the dusty 30's with them until 1937, when they returned to Kansas.
