NEWTON AND VICINITY

Funeral services were held Aug. 9 in the First Mennonite Church of Winnipeg, Man. for John (Jean) Thiessen, 64, who died there from cancer Aug. 7 in Concordia Hospital. Thiessen was among the well-known group of 62 refugees who fled Communist Russia through Constantinople in the early 1920's. For a short while he was employed by the Herald Publishing Co., then left Newton for Chicago where he established his own printing plant. His wife, one son and two daughters survive. The body was taken to Chicago for burial.
