FANNIE ETHEL SLOAN
Fannie Ethel Sloan was born Nov. 7, 1884 at Hartsburg, Ohio to William and May (Waugh) Sloan. She passed to her reward March 30, 1962 at the Berne Nursing Home, Berne, Ind., as a result of complications of old age.
She came to Fort Wayne in 1912 and purchased her home at 1205 St. Mary's Avenue in 1914. She began attending the Mennonite Sunday School the first Sunday of October 1912. After a series of evangelistic meetings in 1913 led by C. K. Brenneman, then of Canton, Ohio, she accepted Christ as her Savior and Lord and was baptized by D. A. Yoder of Elkhart, Ind. on the evening of June 23, 1913.
Because of her crippled condition she was never able to hold a remunerative job, but nevertheless performed many small tasks for the pastors of the church such as caring for their children. Since she did not have a family of her own, her friends and church took this place in her life. A number of years ago she deeded her large house to the church with the pledge that she would be cared for in her old age, which the congregation attempted to do. Until the last she kept in close contact with the events in the church community through reading and writing and would remind the folks that she was praying for her congregation in Ft. Wayne.
She is survived by a brother John of Ecorse, Mich., and a sister Mamie of Tampa, Fla.
Funeral services were held April 3 at the First Mennonite Church, Ft. Wayne, in charge of John R. Smucker and D. A. Yoder.
