Large Attendance At Rayburn Funeral, Saturday
The funeral for House Speakler Sam Rayburn at Bonham, Texas Saturday was one of the largest ever held in that state.
Rayburn died Nov. 16 of cancer at the age of 79. He had served as a House member and speaker longer than any other congressman in the nation's history.
Attending the impressive rites were three presidents: President Kennedy, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Former President Harry S. Truman. The Cabinet and the Supreme Court and the military high command were represented among the mourners.
The services were held in Bonham's prominent First Baptist Church, located in the heart of the city. The officiating pastor was Elder H. G. Ball of the Primitive Baptist Church of nearby Tioga, Texas, of which Rayburn was a member.
