— Word has been received here that P. A. Regier, 72, well-known western Nebraska farmer, died suddenly last Sunday morning at his farm home near Madrid, Neb. Death was due to a heart attack. Only the day before his death Mr. Regier had been working in the corn field. He was a member of the First Mennonite church of Madrid. Funeral services were to be held Wednesday, with a brief service for the family in the Mennonite church, followed by services at the Madrid Methodist church. Peter A Regier, the son of Abraham and Gertrude Hildebrand Regier, was born on July 25, 1887. He departed this life to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday morning, Oct. 25, 1959 at the age of 72 years and three months. He grew up in the Henderson, Neb. community where he enjoyed a happy childhood in his parental family. | |||
He received his elementary education in a Henderson country school, attended the Henderson Bible school and the York College academy. Later he attended the Bethel College academy and graduated from it in 1913. | |||
On June 7, 1916 he was united in marriage to Marie F. Huebert of Henderson, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of married life for 43 years. | |||
For a number of years he taught country school in the Henderson community. In 1921 he began farming in western Nebraska while continuing to teach school during the winter months at Henderson. His first land was bought near Paxton, but he sold this land and bought a farm near Madrid where he moved with his family in 1928 and continued to live there until his death. | |||
He will long be remembered as a leader in church and community building as well as being a kind, loving husband and a generous father, greatly concerned for the temporal and spiritual welfare of his children. He loved the Lord and demonstrated it by his lifelong practice of having family devotions in which singing, Scripture reading, praying and studying the weekly Sunday school lessons were the normal family activity. He was not only a staunch supporter of the Madrid Mennonite church, which he helped organize, bus was equally active in attending and supporting the wider conference activities of his church. In 1952 he attended the World Mennonite Conference in Basel, Switzerland. | |||
In the local community he was instrumental in organizing the North Madrid Telephone Co. and was a strong promoter and member of the Perkins County Hospital Board. For a time he served as a Northern District Conference representative on the board of directors of Freeman Jr. College. | |||
He enjoyed good health throughout his life with the exception of a chronic heart condition. | |||
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Marie; five children, Peter Alvin, Jr., Herman Lee, (Marian) Mrs. Harold Doerksen, all of Madrid, (Ruth) Mrs. Curtis Preheim of Parker, S. D., and Ivan Gene, now attending Bethel college at North Newton, Kansas; two brothers, John A. Regier and Abraham A. Regier of Henderson; and 16 grandchildren. Preceding him in death were one son, Karl William, an adopted child; five sisters, (Sarah) Mrs. George Huebert, Susanna and Gertrude Regier, (Elizabeth) Mrs. John Goertzen and (Anna) Mrs. H. J. Huebert, and one grandchild, Wendell Lee Doerksen. | |||
