86-Year-Old Bishop Called By Death

JOHN A. STOLTZFUS WAS OLDEST BISHOP IN BEACHY AMISH CHURCHES

Lancaster, Pa. — Funeral services for John A. Stoltzfus, 86, oldest Bishop of the Beachy Amish churches, were conducted April 8 at the Weavertown Amish Mennonite Church near Bird-in-hand. He died April 3 at the Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.

Bishop Beachy [sic Stoltzfus] was ordained a minister in 1911 and to the office of bishop in 1927, and was known and respected throughout the church constituency. Relatives and friends from a number of states attended the funeral. Over 1,000 persons attended the viewing at the home on Sunday, and nearly 900 attended the final services.

Surviving are his second wife, the former Amanda Beachy, five children, 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His first wife, who was Annie Stoltzfus, died in 1940.
