SAMUEL MUELLER

Samuel Mueller, son of Henry and Katherine (nee Weber) Mueller, was born on Jan. 7, 1872, in Kothau, Bavaria, Germany. His parents, brother and sisters migrated to Halstead, Kan. in the late fall of 1886. All except several others, now deceased, returned to Germany after being here only two months, discouraged by the severe winter of 1886.

In June 1900 he again returned to the Halstead community and lived there the remainder of his life except for a period in 1814-15 [sic 1914-15] when he and his family lived in Hampshire, Texas, returning in September 1915 following the hurricane of that year.

In his youth, he was baptized by Rev. Jacob Herschler of the Eichstock Mennonite Church in Germany. His membership was transferred to the First Mennonite Church in 1900, the year he returned, where he was a faithful and active member as long as his health permitted.

He was married to Lydia Ellenberger, who came from Germany to Halstead in the spring of 1901. Six children were born to them. Two sons, Walter Gerhardt and Samuel Walter, died as infants. One sister and four brothers also preceded him [sic in] death.

After almost three years of ill health, being seriously ill the last week in the Halstead Hospital, he was called to his eternal reward on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, 1956. He reached the age of 84 years, ten months and 29 days.

Surviving him is Mrs. Mueller who is not able to be with the family because of ill health; two sons, Adolph of San Jose, Calif. and Paul of Halstead; two daughters, Frieda (Mrs. Clarence A. Warren) and Helen (Mrs. Henry Will), all of Halstead; one brother, Peter of Bell, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Baehr, Miss Katherine Mueller and Miss Caroline Mueller, all of Halstead; 13 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Dec. 8 in the First Mennonite Church with his pastor, Rev. Roland R. Goering, as the officiating minister. Mrs. Marvin Westerman, Mrs. Otto Quiring, Milton Ewy and Otto Quiring sang, "So Nimm Den Meine Hande" and "Commit Thy Grief." Mrs. Harvey Vogt was the organist. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the Halstead Cemetery.
