EUGENE MARTENS
Eugene Martens was born in 1914 in Herbert, Sask. He was saved in his 16th year and joined the MB church in Herbert. Later he spent a year in the copper mines of B,C, before returning to farm for a number of years. He attended the Herbert Bible School and Briercrest Bible Institute and was ordained to the ministry in 1952, serving at the Turnhil1 church for about 10 years and in Swift Current as well. After 1963, when the family moved to Swift Current, he was actively involved with the MB Church there. He was active in the Westbank Bible Camp for about 20 years in a variety of capacities, and on the Home Missions Board of Saskatchewan for 15 years.
Due to a heart condition, he was forced to restrict his activities somewhat. He died in a traffic accident while returning from his daily trip to the ranch on January 13. He was 53 years old. His family treasures the fine example he left for them to follow.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia, and children, all of Swift Current: Marina and John Bergen, Harold and Sylvia Martens, Gordon and Sonya Martens , Dorothy and Hichard Weetman, Ruth (at MBBC), Dorothy and Julie Martens, 11 grandchildren, 7 brothers, 2 sisters, and his mother, Mrs. Anna Martens.
