— Funeral services were held Friday at the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church for David S. Bergen, 69, who died Monday, June 4. He is survived by his wife Margaret; three daughters and one son; a brother and sister. A. S. Bergen and Mrs. Elizabeth Unruh, both of Newton; as well as three half brothers.

DAVID S. BERGEN

David S. Bergen was born on April 12, 1887, in Harvey County, Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs. John Bergen. His early childhood was spent near Durham, Kansas.

As a young man he came to Buhler where he met Maggie Riffel, who became his wife on Dec. 8, 1910. To this marriage were born four children: Edna, Margaret, Alvin, and Ardena.

Father dedicated himself to a new life in Christ at the age of about 20 and was baptized May 20, 1907, when he also became a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Father lived in Buhler until 1942, when out parents moved to Wichita for three years and then to Fresno, Calif., returning to Buhler five years ago.

His health was fairly good throughout life, except that he was failing for the last five years. He suffered from a heart condition from which he did not fully recover. Death came suddenly but peacefully Monday evening, June 4, 1956, shortly after supper in his home at Buhler.

Whenever possible, father was active in the work of the Lord. His service as a member of the Committee for the Sunshine Mission Home, the home for the aged, will be greatly missed, as well as other services for Christ in and through the local church. In his own quiet manner, but deep in his faith in god, devout in his prayer life, and fervent in his devotions, he guided his family with loving concern and care. His Christian life of prayer and concern for the family and others will be greatly missed by his wife and children.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie; his children, Edna, Mrs. John R. Doerksen of Buhler, Kansas, Margaret, Mrs. Wayne Hylton on Fresno, Calif., Alvin of Buhler, Kansas, and Ardena, Mrs. Leonard Beltz of Wichita, Kansa, three sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Riffel, Buhler, Kansas; four brothers, Abram Bergen of Newton, Kansas Jon Bergen of Newport, Wash., Pete Bergman of Osborne, Kansas, Frank Bergman of Shafter, Calif.; and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Unruh, Newton, Kansas.

Having lived for 69 years, one month, and 23 days, 45 years of which he shared with his wife in a blessed and happy marriage union, father is now in the immediate presence of the Christ whom he loved.

We mourn the departure of our dear father, yet not as much as who have no hope, for we are assured that when Christ shall come to be united with all the saints, we shall be reunited with father who has preceded us to glory. The testimony of his faith in Christ fills out heart with joy and gratitude and we shall ever cherish the memory of his peaceful homegoing while reading the Bible which was precious to his heart. — The Bereaved Family; Mother and Children.
