JACOB B. THIESEN

Jacob B. Thiesen, son of Jacob Thiesen and Katharine Block Thiesen, was born in the village Klippenfeld, South Russia, on October 30, 1866, and died in the Bethesda hospital, Goessel, Kansas on October 8, 1949, making him 82 years, 11 months and eight days of age.

At the age of eight years he with his parents, brothers and sister migrated to the United States and settled in Marion county, Kansas, southeast of Goessel. He thus grew up in the pioneer years, of which he had many vivid recollections. He attended the elementary schools which at that time were mostly German. One of his teachers was the late Rev. H. R. Voth, whom he cherished in memory. He grew up in a Christian home.

On May 21, 1888, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith in Jesus Christ by Elder Jacob Buller and was received as a member into the Alexanderwohl church. When the Tabor church was organized in 1908 he became a charter member, and remained a faithful member to the end.

On January 13, 1898, he was joined in matrimony to Helena Schmidt. To this union were born four sons, Daniel, Jacob, Paul and John. The latter died in infancy. Later two girls were taken into the home, of whom one, Mrs. Erwin Dyck, preceded him in death. Mother passed away on January 22, 1939. His parents, brothers and sister all preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his passing three sons, Daniel S. Thiesen, Jacob S. Thiesen, and Paul Thiesen; eleven grandchildren (one passed away); two brothers-in-law, John U. Schmidt, Hutchinson, Kansas, and David J. Schmidt, Aberdeen, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. A. J. Schmidt and Mrs. H. J. S. Schmidt.

He enjoyed good health until a year ago, since when he had been sick off and on. Tuesday, Oct 4, he was up and around doing his daily chores, and the same night he took sick suddenly. Upon the advice of the physician he was taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon where the best of care was given him. He suffered severely the last two days. The cause of his death was a blood clot.

We feel he has left us too soon and yet we are thankful that God has blessed him with a long life. We will miss his advice and admonishments. Upon entering his room we often found him reading his Bible or a good story book.

Funeral services were held in the Tabor church on Oct. 10, Rev. H. B. Schmidt officiated. Pallbearers were Albert Schmidt, J. S. Unruh, H. J. Brandt, Arthur Schmidt, Ferd Schmidt and Adolph Thiesen. He was laid to rest in the Tabor cemetery. A quartet composed of P. J. Voth, Alfador Frey, Ed Frey and Ben Voth sang "Asleep in Jesus” at the grave.
