The three were returning home from morning services at the Hutterthal Church when the car driven by Rev. Mendel was involved in a collision at an intersection on Highway 44 a short distance south of the church. Two Parkston youths reportedly were in the other car.

Three killed in Car Crash Near Freeman

Freeman, S. D. — Double funeral services were conducted at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church near here May 23 for Rev. and Mrs. David J. Mendel, who were among three persons killed in a traffic accident on Sunday, May 21. The other victim was Miss Anna Gross, 53, also of Freeman.

The three were returning home from morning services at the Hutterthal Church when the car driven by Rev. Mendel was involved in a collision at an intersection on Highway 44 a short distance south of the church. Two Parkston youths reportedly were in the other car.

Rev. Mendel, 91, was a retired minister of the General Conference Mennonite Church. His wife, Elizabeth, was 78. Both were dead at the scene, while Miss Gross died the same evening at Freeman Community Hospital without regaining consciousness.

Services for the couple were in charge of Rev. Vernon Lohrentz, the pastor, and Rev. P. G. Hofer.
