— The Newton community was shocked last week-end with the news that Clarence F. Steinkirchner, 56, owner of the Citizen's Finance and Loan Company, had been brutally murdered in the office of the company at 105 West Fifth street. The tragedy occurred Saturday evening, the body being discovered at about 8:00 p. m. by Mrs. Steinkirchner after her husband failed to return home for the evening meal and repeated calls to the office brought no response. He had been shot through the chest and suffered head injuries. There was definite evidence that the motive was robbery, although the amount taken has not been determined.

— On Wednesday, Nov. 27, in the district court at Newton, Jose Villar was committed to the state industrial reformatory at Hutchinson until "released by law." Villar, only 16 years of age, had just entered a plea of guilty to the charge of first degree murder, having previously confessed to the slaying of Clarence Steinkirchner in the office of the Citizens Finance and Loan company on Nov. 2. The court has yet to make a decision in the case of Morris Romero, 14, charged with murder and being an accessory after the fact. It has been found after a check of the company records that the theft amounted to around $800, of which $425 was found in a hiding place along Sand creek.
