John F. Goertz Sr., 90, of Newton died Friday (March 5, 2004) at his residence.

He was born July 2, 1913, in rural Newton to John S. and Helen Goertz. He was a heavy machine mechanic and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He served in World War II as a Navy SEABEE in the South Pacific and lived in Alaska for many years where he homesteaded 160 acres. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include: a son, John Goertz Jr. of rural Newton; three sisters, Emma Goertz of Wichita, Heddie Goertz of Augusta and Alberta Mates of Texas; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Charlotte Goertz and Helen Roosevelt.

Services were Friday night at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Vern Bender and Peter Hartman officiating.

John F. Goertz, 90, died today (March 5, 2004) in rural Newton.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p. m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 7:30 p. m. today at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with family greeting friends following the service.

John F. Goertz Sr.

John F. Goertz Sr., 90, of Newton died Friday (March 5, 2004) at his residence.

He was born July 2, 1913, in rural Newton to John S. and Helen Goertz. He was a heavy machine mechanic and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
