Former Pastor, GC Administrator Dies in Newton
NEWTON, Kan. — Willard K. Claassen, 84, a former pastor and executive director of education for the General Conference Mennonite Church, died Oct. 10.
His pastoral ministry began with two years of service in Pennsylvania. Then he served Salem Mennonite Church in Freeman, S. D., for 11 years. He moved back to his hometown of Newton in 1951 and became executive director of education at the GC headquarters until the early 1970s.
He taught photography at Hesston College for several years. He was a member of Faith Mennonite Church in Newton.
He is survived by his wife, Justena, of Schowalter Villa in Hesston; a daughter, Barbara Wilkens of Palo Alto, Calif.; a brother, Carl of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a sister, Hester Busenitz of Whitewater; and two grandchildren.
