Ernest J. Claassen, 87, retired farmer and a lifelong resident here, died Oct. 7 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. He was a long time member of the Newton First Mennonite Church and of the Christian Businessmen's Assn. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the church, with Rev. Robert D. Suderman officiating. Survivors include his widow, the former Anna Schroeder; a daughter, Mrs. Frank Busenitz of Whitewater; two sons, Rev. Willard K. Claassen of Newton and Dr. Carl Claassen of Woodland, Calif.; one brother, Arthur, of Newton; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
