Mrs. Maria (Eitzen) Janzen, daughter of David and Helena (Friesen) Eitzen, was born on May 5, 1891 in Berjansk, South Russia, and departed this life on Jan. 16, 1963, at Newton, Kan.

At the age of one she came with her parents to the United States, settling in Kansas. She was reared in the Inman community where she received her education, which included one year of Bible school under the direction of Rev. J. H. Epp.

She was married to Peter H. Janzen on May 5, 1909 at Inman.

She took catechism in the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church where she learned to know her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith and received as a member of the Hoffnungsau church on June 7, 1908. Later, while living east of Newton, she united with the Grace Hill Mennonite Church.

In 1934, after moving to Newton from the Turpin, Okla. community, she united with the First Mennonite Church of which she remained a faithful member until her death. Here she was a member of the Bethel Sunday School Class and of the Christian Service Society, where she enjoyed the sewing meetings greatly. She was also a member of the Bethel Hospital Senior Auxiliary. She enjoyed the religious programs on the radio almost every day.

Together with her husband she was permitted to enjoy the celebration of their 25th as well as their 50th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are her husband of the home, and four children, Arnold and wife of Liberal, Kan., Edna and husband, E. F. Bartel, of Turpin, Okla., Dorothy and husband, E. W. Sangals, of Wichita, and Dr. Ervin and wife of Springfield, Ill. In addition to these there are 12 grandchildren, one great grandson, four sisters, and one brother.
