Funeral services were held June 11 at Sister Frieda Chapel, Newton, for H. Roland van der Smissen, 85, of Newton but formerly of Highland Springs, Va. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. A retired public school teacher, he died June 9 at Newton's Bethel Home for the Aged. He was a member of the Bethel college Mennonite Church, North Newton. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Hope Smook of Richmond, Va.; five sisters, Mrs. Hilda Voran and Mrs. Frieda C. Andreas, both of North Newton, Mrs. Elisabeth Clemmer of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Mrs. Edna Cowsert of Junction, Texas, and Mrs. Ruth Johnson of Huntington, Ind.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
