SOUDERTON, Pa. - Abraham Schmitt, well-known Men-nonite author and family therapist, died after heart surgery Nov. 18. He was 67.
Schmitt wrote eight books, including The Art of Listening with Love, Dialogue with Death, Renewing Family Life, Turning Again to Life and Brilliant Idiot: An Autobiography of a Dyslexic. He wrote for Christian Living, Gospel Herald and Mennonite Weekly Review.
He and his wife, Dorothy, conducted marriage enrichment seminars, and in recent years he spoke widely on learning disabilities. He was a social worker for family and children’s services and a supervisor of clinical practice. He had a private practice in individual, marriage and family counseling in Souderton, from which he retired in 1993.
He had graduate degrees in social work from the University of Pennsylvania, where he held a professorship.
Schmitt is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Mary Lou Gallucci of Columbus, Ohio, Ruth Ann Heilemann of Woxall and Lois Hallock of Bothell, Wash.; a son, David of Seattle; a grandson; four sisters, Mary Ens and Dorothy Wiebe of Swift Current, Sask., Tina Friesen of Calgary, Alta., and Helen Kernick of Canmore, Alta.; and two brothers, Jerry and John of Swift Current. An identical twin brother, Peter, died in 1993. Services were held at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church. Pastor Truman Brunk quoted from Schmitt’s autobiography: "I truly believe that for every person life can begin again ... that the present can be transcended and the future made glorious."
