DAVID SCHMIDT

David J. Schmidt, 89, of Aberdeen, Idaho died at his home on March 9, 1973.

A son of Jacob A. Schmidt and Anna Unruh, he was born May 4, 1883 in the Greenfield community near Goessel, Kan. He attended the elementary school there.

He was baptized on May 31, 1903 and received into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel with Elder Peter Balzer officiating. After the Tabor Mennonite Church was organized, he joined that congregation.

On Jan. 17, 1913 he married Mary Ensz. Elder P. H. Richert officiated. They farmed in Marion County, Kansas before moving to Dubois, Idaho in 1915.

In 1919, due to the drouth, they moved to Aberdeen and took up farming. Later he became custodian of the First Mennonite Church, which position he filled devotedly for 14 years.

Mr. Schmidt had enjoyed fairly good health during his retirement and died unexpectedly. He reached the age of 89. One daughter preceded him in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last month.

Those remaining to cherish the memory of his life are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Esther Schritter, Aberdeen, and Ruth and husband Henry Wiebe, Aberdeen; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren Funeral services were held March 12, 1973 at the First Mennonite Church with. Rev. Aaron Epp officiating.
