MENNO J. SCHMIDT
Menno J. Schmidt, son of Benjamin and Anna Harms Schmidt was born on Jan. 12, 1890, in Harvey County, Kansas. He departed this life on May 4, 1973 at the Axtell Christian Hospital, Newton, Kan., at the age of 83.
He was baptized by Rev. P. H. Richert on June 4, 1911 and received as a member of the Tabor Mennonite Church, of which he remained a member until his death.
He worked away from home most of his life. Some of the places where he worked were: Canada; Detroit, Mich.; Chicago, Ill. The last several years he had made his home in Newton, Kan.
Menno found it easy to make friends. For a number of years he worked for his cousin, Mrs. Will Ewert, in Canada. He saw her two daughters Hilda and Elva grow up and learned to love them as though they were his own children. Menno found much joy in helping others.
For most of his life Menno enjoyed good health. His wish was that he might depart this life without going through a long sickness. God granted him his wish.
His brothers and sisters will long remember his kindness, love and cheerfulness.
He was preceded in death by two sisters who died in infancy and Margaret, Mrs. Dave Rutschman, who passed away in April 1962.
Surviving family members are Mary, Mrs. Harms of Newton, Kan.; Paul and wife Sara, Philip, Chris, Katrine, Esther, Mrs. Becker, Sam and wife Justina of Goessel, Kan.; Rose and husband Henry of Deer Creek, Okla.; eight nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services were conducted on May 5 at the Tabor Mennonite Church with Rev. Albert Gaeddert officiating.
