ANNA HARDER NEUFELD
Anna Harder Neufeld was born on June 13, 1888, near Inman, Kan. to Gerhard and Margaretha Harder. She was baptized in June of 1905 and became a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church near Inman. She taught German Bible School for several terms. In the fall of 1910 she enrolled at Bethel College and attended two years.
Mother was married to Heinrich T. Neufeld on Aug. 15, 1912, and they went to Cantonment, Okla. to study the Cheyenne language. On June 8, 1913, they were ordained as missionaries to the Cheyenne Indians in Montana. After three years in Montana they were transferred to Oklahoma to work first among the Cheyenne at Fonda and then the Arapahoe at Canton.
Other ministries in which they worked together included teaching at the Oklahoma Bible Academy, Meno; organizing and serving the Bethel Mennonite Church of Enid, Okla.; and teaching in a conference group in Mexico. After supervising several mission and voluntary service projects, they retired and move to Denver City, Texas. Father passed away on July 19, 1968.
Mother then moved back to Inman where she continued active in such things as the Women’s Missionary Society. She enjoyed good health, making it possible for her to visit occasionally each at her seven children and to continue her quilting, knitting, and crocheting.
She became ill on Dec. 23 and was hospitalized at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton until she went to be with her Lord on Jan. 27, 1973.
Missing her most are her sons, Abraham of Idaho Springs, Colo., and Gerhard of Erie, Kan.; daughters, Margaretha Wiebe of Wichita, Kan., Helen Wehmuller of Okarche, Okla., Gertrude Thiessen of Whitewater, Kan., Ruth Grubbs of Denver City, Texas, and Marianne Penner of Norway, Maine; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. K. E. Kroeker of Inman. Preceding her in death were one son-in-law and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Jan. 30, 1973 at the Bethel Mennonite Church, Inman. Burial was in the South Inman Cemetery.
