Longtime Congo missionary dies at 83

FRESNO, Calif. — Arnold Prieb, a longtime Mennonite Brethren missionary to congo and the first president of the Congolese MB conference, died May 4 at age 83.

Prieb and his wife, Rosella, served in Congo from 1950 to 1980, traveling to villages and mission stations and working in evangelism, church planting and leadership training.

The Congo MB conference elected Prieb a its first president, a position he held for nine years.

In 1980, the couple moved to Fresno, Calif., where Prieb was associate pastor of Bethany Church for 12 years.

Born Feb. 6, 1924, at Buhler, Kan., Prieb also served on the board of the MBMS International mission agency. He married Rosella Koop on Sept. 11, 1945.

He is survived by a daughter, Gloria Enns; four sons, Garry, Larry, Arnie and James; a brother, Eldo; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

ARNOLD PRIEB

Arnold Prieb died May 4. He was born in Buhler, Kan. Feb. 6, 1924 to Peter J. and Mary Prieb. He married Rosella Koop Sept. 21, 1945 and they went to DR Congo as missionaries in 1950, working in evangelism, church planting, and leadership training for 30 years. Arnold was the first elected president of the MB church of Congo. After returning to the U.S., he was associate pastor at Bethany MB Church, Fresno, Cal. for 12 years, served on conference boards, and visited Congo 8 times to encourage the believers. He had a deep faith, a pioneering spirit, boundless energy, and a love of music. He said, "My service for my Lord were the best years of my life: Predeceased by an infant daughter, he is mourned by Rosella, children Gloria Enns, Garry, Larry, Arnie, and James; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The memorial service was May 11 at Bethany MB Church.
