MRS. BERTHA SCHMIDT
Bertha Weinbrenner Schmidt was born on May 27, 1908 to Robert and Maria (Schmidt) Weinbrenner.
She was baptized by Rev. P. H. Unruh on May 23, 1926 and received as a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel, Kan. where she remained faithful until her death.
On Oct 12, 1929 Bertha and Henry M. Schmidt were married at the Alexanderwohl Church by Rev. P. H. Unruh. They resided southwest of Hillsboro where they were engaged in farming. Five children were born to this union, of whom Merlin and Kenneth died in infancy and Lloyd in 1973.
Bertha and Henry enjoyed 45 years together. She was a loving and concerned wife and mother, and immensely enjoyed her grandchildren. For many years she was a member of the Faithful Workers Mission Society. She enjoyed life, and lived it at its fullest. Due to hearing difficulties, she especially enjoyed quiet moments. She found joy in her service at the Bethesda Home, first as a cook and later doing all the baking until she was no longer able to be on her feet. She suffered much in her lifetime, having gone through several major surgeries.
She entered Salem Hospital on Oct. 20, 1974 for treatment of a painful leg ulcer. She remained there until her unexpected death on Oct. 29. She reached the age of 66.
She leaves to mourn her husband; one daughter Doris and husband Willard Dirksen of rural Moundridge; one son Clinton and wife Jeraldine of rural Hillsboro; five grandchildren; one brother, Albert Weinbrenner and wife Ella of rural Lehigh; one brother-in-law, Ben Unruh and wife Velma of Aulne. One sister, Lydia Unruh, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 2, in the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, with Rev. Ronald Krehbiel officiating.
