Fire in Lancaster County Home Claims Life of Girl, 15
Ephrata, Pa. — A night-time fire Dec. 21 at the Phares B. Rutt home near New Holland claimed the life of their 15-year-old daughter, Gladys.
Firemen arrived at the home shortly before midnight to find the home ablaze. Three firemen hear cries for help from Gladys, who was in a second story bedroom, but were unable to reach her because of the flames and heat.
It is believed the fire originated in a wall behind the fireplace chimney.
Funeral services for the girl were held Dec. 24 at the New Holland Mennonite Church.
