A native of Marion, S. D., he served as pastor of the Salem congregation here for 26 years, beginning in 1929. He was active in evangelistic work and served on the district Evangelization Committee for many years. He was largely responsible for the founding of Bethany Bible School which operated here from 1938 to 1955. | |||
From 1955 to 1958 Rev. and Mrs. Ortmann shared in the ministry of the Minfield Children's Home near Auk Bay, Alaska. Mrs. Ortmann, the former Helena Tieszen, preceded her husband in death by about one month. | |||

Retired North Dakota Minister Dies While On Visit in Montana
Munich, N. D. — Memorial services for Rev. Hellmuth F. Ortmann, 77, retired minister of the Northern District Conference, were held July 31 at the Salem Mennonite Church here.
Rev. Ortmann died in his sleep while visiting his eldest daughter, Mrs. Peter Thiessen, at Warroad, Minn.
