• A highway accident two miles south of Hesston on Highway 81 last Thursday evening claimed the life of Gilbert Alan Wiens, 30, of Whitewater and injured two other persons. Mr. Wiens was standing near his stalled pickup truck which he had parked off the highway, when an El Dorado motorist came over the hill and struck the truck and Wiens. The car then collided headon with the car of Frank Pierce, 22, of Hesston, who had turned around and come back to aid Wiens. The latter died in Bethel Deaconess hospital about three hours later. Mrs. Pierce, who was sitting in the Pierce auto, suffered head injuries and Duane K. Zuercher, 21, who was sitting in the pickup, sustained fractures of both legs, lacerations and head injuries as the truck was knocked into the ditch. Mr. Wiens leaves his widow of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Wiens of rural Newton; three brothers and seven sisters. His funeral was held Tuesday morning at the Catholic church in Andover.
