JOE WIEBE
Joe Wiebe passed away Apr. 17. He was born Aug. 7, 1909 in Greenland, Man. A handful at school and a rascal at home, he was reborn in the faith after he was awakened by the sound of a powerful wind at 2 a.m. one calm summer night. Hearing a voice calling him to be saved, he gave his life to Christ. Thus began a walk with God that deepened over 70 years. It included a ministry of leading others to Christ, visions, miracles and great love. He married Marie Toews in 1938. After completing studies at Winnipeg Bible College, they dedicated their lives to serving God. He served in establishing churches in Stuartburn and Mame. For a number of years, he was part of a male quartet serving in churches and at evangelistic meetings in southeastem Manitoba. He supported Canadian Sunday School Mission and its camp work, and was instrumental in starting Red Rock Bible Camp. He served in a variety of leadership roles in churches and home Bible study groups in Ashern, Clarkleigh, Steinbach, Lindal, Snowflake, Winnipegosis and Winnipeg. In more recent years, his unique gift of personal visitation took him to care homes and hospitals. As a result of his personal ministry, hundreds of people became followers of Christ. His ministry was marked by love, prayer, sharing the Word of God and simple faith. After a serious stroke in 1992, his work slowed considerably, but his positive outlook and faith continued to be a source of inspiration. Later, when his speech was almost gone and strength failed, he could stiii say, "I love you" and be understood to mean it unconditionally. Predeceased by Marie in 1985, daughter Eunice in 1968, 5 brothers and 4 sisters, he is mourned by children Ruth, Lois Wedel, Phillip, David, and Janet Panford; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters. The funeral was Apr. 20 in Westwood Community Church, Winnipeg, with David Wiebe and Laura Friesen ministering.
