REV. JOHN J. FUNK

Rev. John J. Funk of Steinbach, Man., was born on March 28, 1897 at Nikolaital, south Russia. He passed away on April 17 after a short illness. Rev. Funk married Elise Martens on May 7, 1922 and they enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life together until her death in July, 1977. The Funks left Russia in 1925, settling in a Mennonite village near Swift Current, Sask. Here eight of their nine children were born. In 1940 they moved to Elm Creek, Man., where they farmed for 27 years, and then retired to Steinbach. For ten years they enjoyed good health and a more relaxed lifestyle.

Mr. Funk sought to serve God as a minister whenever possible. At various times he served as a church leader, youth leader, Sunday school teacher and on conference committees. He loved God's Word and disciplined himself to read through it twice each year. It brought him much joy to see his children become active in Christian service. After the passing of his wife, he lived alone and in good health until a week before his passing.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Elizabeth, in 1956 and his wife in 1977. Left to mourn are his children and their spouses: John and Ella Funk, Anne (Mrs . Abe) Schellenberg, Tina (serving with MCC in Lesotho), Frank and Martha Funk, Henry and Hedy Funk, Margaret (Mrs. Albert) Petkau, Herman and Mary Voth, and Neil and Laura Funk; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank; and many friends and relatives.
