15-Yr.-Old Ohio Youth Drowns in Farm Pond

Sugarcreek, Ohio. — Funeral services were held July 2 at the Maysville Mennonite Church for Levi H. Miller, 15, who drowned in a farm pond in the Maysville community on June 29.

The youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Miller of Maysville, was a freshman last year at Waynedale High School.

Levi and three companions including his brother, Freddie, had gone swimming in a pond on the Roman Troyer farm. He reportedly slipped from a board used for diving and sank into about six feet of water where he became entagld [sic] in weeds.

Freddie Miller and Harvey Hochstetler, Jr. went into the water to try to save him. Fred Barr, Jr., who was already on the way home, heard their cries for help and returned to the pond. He was able to get the two would-be rescuers out of the water, but could not extricate Levi from the weeds.

The Apple Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene and recovered the body.
