During the first world war he served in the medical corps on trains transporting wounded soldiers. In the fall of 1918. while teaching at Molotschna, he found the Lord and was baptized into the Alliance Church in Lichtfeld. He married a teaching colleague, Lydia Dyck in 1922.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Aganetha; two sons and their wives. Harry and Barbara of Etobicoke. Ont., and Jim and Helen of Ottawa; two daughters, Annetta (Mrs. Willi) Toews and Helen (Mrs. Walter) Bergmann, both of Ontario; ten grandchildren; two brothers, George and Abram; two sisters (Mrs.) Sara Kornelsen and (Mrs.) Mary Schmidt: and many friends.
