HERMAN SCHMOR
Herman Brian Schmor was born in Hampton, Nebraska, July 27, 1898. He passed away on January 12, 1975 in Abbotsford, B.C. He is survived by his loving wife Nettie, and by seven children - Marvin of New Westminster, Earl of Mission, Robert of Winnipeg, Grace of Winnipeg, Pearl of Yorkton, Blanche of Abbotsford, and Jennifer of Winnipeg.
At an early age he moved with his parents to Rosehill, North Dakota from Nebraska, in a covered wagon. They were early pioneers in that area. The sod house they lived in for four years became one of his fondest memories.
In 1913 the family came to Canada to join relatives who were already farming in Saskatchewan. It was there at a meeting conducted by Rev. C. N. Hiebert that he accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour, and met his future wife, Nettie Peters. They were both baptized and accepted into membership of the Mennonite Brethren Church in June, 1914. They were married on November 29, 1917, and this union lasted for 57 years. Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated in Hepburn, Saskatchewan in 1967.
Herman farmed in the Hepburn area from 1917 to 1965. These were years of hard work and sometimes few returns, but he gave his family a feeling of security because of his faith and optimism.
He took an active part in the work of the church-teaching Sunday school, serving on committees and sharing his musical talents. In the community he served on the school board for 18 years, and was elected for several terms to the town council.
In 1965 Mr. and Mrs. Schmor moved to Clearbrook, B.C. Many of his activities had to be curtailed because of failing health. But, these were precious years; there was time to enjoy old and new friends. Their hospitality was well known.
During his retirement years he spent many hours preparing a family tree and history. This work will be treasured by his family and descendants. He was a good, faithful husband, a loving dad, and a much beloved grandfather. Even in his illness, his faith was strong and his prayers were those of a trusting child of God.
