BENJAMIN APPEIT
Benjamin Appelt was born in Poland on August 5, 1898 and as a youth, in 1914, migrated to Canada. He settled first on a farm at Spruce Grove, Alberta. Because he was crippled he took up the saddlery and shoemaking profession and later watch repairing and jewellery selling.
In 1937 he was baptized upon his confession of faith and accepted into the Baptist Church at Onaway, Alberta. In 1938 he moved to Morden where he soon found fellowship in the Mennonite Brethren Church. He was married to Katie Boldt on September 26, 1943, a union which was blessed with two children, Albert and Doreen.
During their life together, he and his wife experienced many blessings as well as some difficult trials. In 1965 he suffered a severe stroke which left him incapacitated and hospitalized despite all efforts and the constant care of doctors. He remained clear of mind, however, and understood well what was said to him and many times responded to scriptures and prayers which were spoken to him with a clear Amen. He passed away at the Morden Hospital on January 27.
He is survived by his wife, Katie Appelt; his son, Albert, and wife of Morden; and his daughter, Doreen, of Morden (now of Bogota, Colombia); two brothers, Edward of Edmonton and Emil of Osoys, B.C.; and two sisters, Elsie and Wanda, both of Osoys.
The funeral was conducted in the Morden MB Church on January 31 with Walter Janzen, the pastor, ministering.
