TOBIAS H. UNRUH
Tobias H. Unruh was born January 26, 1879, in Lonetree township, McPherson county, Kansas. He departed this life May 8, 1947, at 5:00 a. m. at his home near Tampa, Kansas, reaching the age of 68 years, three months and 11 days. He peacefully passed away by saying good-by to Esther, the daughter of the home, who so faithfully ministered to his needs.
He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in his Redeemer on June 5, 1900, and was taken into the fellowship of the Friedenstal church in the Columbia schoolhouse by the Elder John Gerbrandt. He remained faithful to his church until the end.
He was united in marriage to Lydia Ratzlaff on April 7, 1903, by Elder John Gerbrandt, and they shared joy and sorrow until his dear wife went to be with the Lord in 1922, leaving him a widower for 24 years. This union was blessed with 12 children. Two daughters preceded him in death. Gertrude in infancy and Ada in 1946.
Father was always very active, especially in church work and also during the time our church was organized and built. He served as Sunday School teacher for several years, was a song leader and served the church in various ways.
He had a rough and rocky path to travel in his life, especially after the passing of his wife. Father had to fill his place, not only as a father, but also the vacant place that was left when mother passed away.
Father was in good health until about a year ago, when his health began to fail and the doctor named his illness heart trouble. This ailment caused his death. Throughout his life he kept the faith and fought the good fight of faith. Shortly before his passing he left the assurance that he was ready to go. We are happy that we have this hope.
During his life he was much concerned about the spiritual welfare of his children and his desire was to met them all in glory. He spent much time in prayer to God, from whom he drew his comfort and strength.
He leaves to mourn his departure the children, Arthur of Greensburg, Lincoln of Galva, Irene (Mrs. Marvin Koehn) of Moundridge, Joseph and Margaret (Mrs. Irvin Dirks) of Tampa, Otto of Hillsboro, Menno of Salina, Esther, Reinhart, and Levi of the home, 25 grandchildren (one preceding him in death), seven brothers, three sisters, two aunts, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held May 11 at the Friedenstal Mennonite church of Tampa. Min. Harvey Jantz officiated with Rev. D. J. Unruh of Newton assisting. Mrs. Harvey Jantz was at the piano. Interment at the Friedenstal cemetery. — The Family.
