Friedrich C. Ortmann was born Sept 20, 1868, in the village of Adelhof Rusch, Poland.
 
In the year 1874, together with his parents, he came to America at the age of five years, arriving at Yankton, S. Dak., and coming to this community and settling near the West Vermillion river. Later he too made his home here, receiving also his education in the local school. Upon confession of faith he was baptized by Rev. Peter Becker. He was a life-long member of the Bethel church.
 
On July 24, 1892, he was married to Helena Schmidt; this union was blessed with one son, August.  The mother passed away July 11, 1893.
 
On March 14, 1895, he entered into holy wedlock with Maria Schmidt. They lived together over 32 years and this union was dissolved on January 6, 1928.
 
Our beloved father was very active in Sunday school work, church and mission work, taking a great part also in community life. Freeman college was also very dear to his heart upholding all the work with earnest prayer. He spent much time in writing poetry and for Christian newspapers.
 
In 1944 he opened his home for other old folks and a number found there a place of care.

CHARTER MEMBER OF FREEMAN COLLEGE BOARD DEAD AT 81

Freeman. S. D. — F. C. Ortmann, pioneer settler in this community who was active in church and community life for many years, passed away here on Oct 8. He was a charter member of the Freeman college board.

The Bethel church here was filled to overflowing for the funeral services on Oct 13, at which Pres. Edmond Miller paid special tribute to his efforts in behalf of the college. Rev. J. A. Tieszen, the pastor, was in charge of the services
