Well Known Bluffton Professor Is Called Away in Death

DECEASED PROFESSOR WAS A BROTER [sic] OF MRS. G. A, LINSCHEID OF NEWTON

Bluffton, Ohio, May 23. — A career of 38 years as instructor of mathematics and astronomy at Bluffton college came to a close at 2 P. M. Thursday for Prof. Edmund John Hirshler [sic Hirschler], when he died at his home on West Elm Street, here. He was 65 years old on Wednesday.

Prof. Hirshler [sic Hirschler], active in college community and church affairs most of his life, suffered a heart attack on Thursday afternoon. He had been bedfast since Feb. 4 when he was stricken by paralysis while at the college.

He was born on May 21, 1876, in Franklin, Iowa, the son of Rev. John and Christine (Schmidt) Hirshler [sic Hirschler]. On July 14, 1908, he was married to Amanda Elida Zepp, who survives with a son, a daughter, and a number of brothers and sisters.

Prof. Hirshler [sic Hirschler] was graduated from Kansas University with an A. B. degree and received his master's degree in 1917 from the University of Chicago. He attended Yale in 1927-28. He first taught school in Kansas, going from thereto Rose Polytechnic Institute, Terre Haute, ind., in 1901. He remained there till 1908 when he came to Bluffton to assume a professorship at the college here.

Prof. Hirshler [sic Hirschler] was superintendent of the First Mennonite Sunday School here for 36 years and served many years as a deacon of the church, till health failed him. He was teacher of the en's Bible class till three years ago and had served as secretary of the business committee of the Mennonite General conference. In addition he had served on a committee in charge of Bluffton college after Dr. N. C. Hirshey left till a new president was named. he travelled abroad in 1928.

Prof. Hirshler [sic Hirschler] was listed in the American Men of Science and belonged to the American Association for the advancement of Science, the Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Ki [sic Chi] fraternities and the mathematical Association of America.

Surviving in addition to the widow are the son, Dr. Alfred E. Hirshler [sic Hirschler], Ridley Park, Pa., the daughter, Mrs. Celia Igmire, 696 E. Robb Ave., Lima; and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Anna Linscheid, Newton, Kan.; Mrs. Marie Vogt, Ann Arbor, Mich., Mrs. Amanda Hostetler, Long Beach, Calif., Arnold Hirschler of Hillsboro, Kan.; Dan Hirschler of Emporia, Kan., and Otto of Los Angeles, Calif. A son Paul, died three years ago.

Prof Hirshler [sic Hirschler] belonged to the First Mennonite church here where final rites will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. H. T. Unruh, pastor, and Dr. L. L. Ramseyer, president of Bluffton college, will officiate.
