text of obituary:

Fritz Bartelt

was born June the 6th in Starrgart, Pommern, Germany. He migrated to this country as a young man of 21 years and settled down at Newton, Kansas for a number of years. In March 1893 he entered into the holy bonds of matrimony with his now bereaved widow, Helena Goertzen. In the same year he also was received into the Mennonite church of Newton, Kansas. In spring of 1906 they came to Oregon where he has lived ever since on 998 E. 7th N. Portland. Because there was no church of his kind in Portland he regularly attended the German M. E. on Rodney Ave. an Stanton Str.

The departed was a sincere christian of a modest and humble character respected and loved by all he came in contact with. Where ever he could do a favor to any person or cause he did it cheerfully.

For several months his health was failing, which made it necessary to go to the Immanuels hospital and undergo an operation. The operation was successful and apparently had given him relief. But his strength and vitality ebbed away. On Sunday morning Jan. 6th he fell asleep and in this condition passed away without a struggle peacfully [sic] ready to meet his Savior and submissive to His summons.

Funeral services were held at the Pearson Funeral Church, where Rev. Schumann from the German M. E. church spoke in German on the text chosen by the departed in Heb. 13, 14 and Rev. Baumgartner spoke in English on Luke 24,29.

His age is 65 years and 7 months. He leaves his bereaved wife and a host of friends to mourn his death. The remains were laid to rest in the Ross City cemetery on 52 and Fremont Str. — Contributed.
